『彼女の世界』
沖縄は第二次大戦の激戦地だった、その後1945年から1972年5月までアメリカ軍に支配されることになる。
沖縄人はアメリカの文明や文化を取り入れ、毎夏になると襲われる台風に備えるため、木造の瓦葺きの家からコンクリートの家に変容させて行った。
しかし、それもすでに過去のこと。すでに日本復帰から５０年以上が経ち、当時建てられた最新鋭の住宅は古びて崩壊してゆく。
それは彼女がまだ子供だった頃、夢のような眩しい光景が広がる場所だったのに。
子供達の自由な声、老人たちが丹精込めた庭。
亜熱帯の庭は放置すると暴走し、全てを緑で覆い尽くしてしまう。
けれど、老人たちはその庭に愛情を注ぎ、呆れるほどの努力の中で美しい庭を貧しい、裕福ではない環境の中で維持を続けていた。
しかし、それは次第に風化しつつあり、過去のものになりつつある。
単にノスタルジーかも知れない。けれど、彼女の描く世界は子供たちの喜び、恐れ、あるいは希望。そして何も考えられないほどの自由に溢れている。
複雑な家庭環境だった彼女は、それでも、自らの感じる美しい光景の中を旅している。
Okinawa was a fierce battlefield during World War II and was subsequently placed under the control of the U.S. military from 1945 until May 1972.
The Okinawan people embraced American civilization and culture, transforming their traditional wooden-tiled houses into concrete ones to withstand the typhoons that strike every summer.
However, that is now a thing of the past. Over 50 years have passed since Okinawa’s reversion to Japan, and the once state-of-the-art houses that were built back then are now aged and crumbling.
It was a place that held dazzling, dream-like scenes when she was still a child.
The free voices of children, the meticulously tended gardens of the elderly.
The subtropical gardens, if left untended, would grow wild and cover everything in green. Yet, the elderly poured their love into those gardens, maintaining their beauty within the poor and not wealthy environment, despite the staggering effort it required.
However, they are gradually deteriorating and becoming a thing of the past. It may simply be nostalgia, but the world she depicts is filled with the joy, fears, and hopes of children, and an overwhelming sense of boundless freedom where nothing else can be contemplated.
Despite coming from a complex family background, she travels through the beautiful scenes she perceives on her own journey.
